The Painter by Cody Johnson
Where I build walls, she sees canvas.
Country music is about stories. Every song is a little novel, and that’s what sets it apart from all other musical genres. This is the first song I feel like writing about.
In a relationship, there are moments of highs and lows. Moments where he builds walls, and she sees a canvas to paint on; moments where the opposite happens: she builds, and he paints. Sometimes, unfortunately, both just build walls.
Yet, even though I sometimes angrily build walls, I’ve been lucky enough to have someone beside me who paints. Maybe not immediately, but we keep moving forward.
My favorite verse (the chorus of the song):
I don’t remember
Life before she came into the picture
Brought the beauty I was missin’ with her
Showed me colors I ain’t ever seen
She took chances
With every wall I built, she saw a canvas
